    Upgading SQL 2005 STD X86 to SQL 2005 STD X64

    Hello Comunity

    I have a server with Windows 2003 server X64, and in the moment i work with Sql server 2005 X86.
    I want to upgrade my Sql Server 2005 X86 to Sql sever 2005 X64.

    i have some dought:

    1-Do i must install X64 in another instance? , if Yes, this is convenient to uninstall my X86 version first, of course after backup my database and system database?

    2-if isn´t necessary to uninstall X86, on the setup of Sql Server 2005 X64, the same one after running update automaticaly my X86 version ??

    What the best practices for doing that?

    Many thanks

    Hi  Luis,

    I am not a SQL expert but this is more of a general question so I'll answer;

    I would always recommend doing a clean install of any program that is mission critical.  My personal preference would be to backup all of your DB's and uninstall the X86 version.  Complete the installation of the X64 version and then download and install all of the relevant patches and updates for the new instance.  This should ensure that no legacy files or processes remain from the older version that could conflict with the newer version.

    Hope this helps,

    RNDnick.
